Initial Thoughts:

I have seen Beanie Feldstein in "What we do in the Shadows" TV show (which is excellent BTW!) and this movie got decent reviews. Plus my wife wanted to see it, so last weekend we went.

Main Points:

It's very hard to come up with a truly original idea. So I would call this movie basically the female version of Superbad (though these two characters are perhaps more likable and certainly smarter). That said this movie is certainly more female-friendly and less gross.

It's a good story, that's well acted and has a nice small role by Lisa Kudrow and Wil Forte. I admire the movie for tackling sexuality, acceptance, popularity, friendship and what it means to have a good balance in your life between work/school/life.

The film shows that sex can be dealt with and not resort to jokes (mostly), nudity, porn, and coarse language. It also never goes for the gross-out factor, which I'm tired of in films/TV.

While there are parts that are supposed to be funny but ultimately just end up being awkward. Even at just over an hour and a half I still found it a little long. For most of the film, however, I was entertained and laughed more than once.

Final Thoughts:

I enjoyed this movie, I'm so far removed from my high school years that it can be nice to be reminded of it and see what it could be like today. Please don't bring kids to this movie, its rated R for a reason, lots of sexual content and some coarse language. I give it a solid 7.5 out of 10 and would recommend it. I look forward to seeing more of Beanie Feldstein.
