Initial Thoughts:
I’ll be honest here, I didn’t have much interest in this movie. My wife and I often take turns and after taking her to Shape of Water this was her pick. The reviews at least were ok, so we went.
Main Points:
I can be hard on movies, especially those outside of my usual preference. So I’ll start with the good, there were some funny parts here. Probably 3 times I laughed out loud. Rachel McAdams is funny and puts in a good performance. Jason Bateman is fine, it’s just he’s played this character so many times (or a slight variation on it) that it’s getting tired. It seems like he’s forever Michael Bluth (from Arrested Development) and he really needs to do something different. Michael C. Hall (whom I loved from Dexter and Six Feet Under) is terrible and never should have been in it. I thought Jesse Plemons was good in his small role but not enough to redeem the film.

Final Thoughts:

This movie is certainly not for kids, lots of coarse language, some violence and some gory scenes make it ages 17+. I can only give it 6 out of 10 and would not recommend it (unless you’re on a date night like me and can’t agree on anything else). For a comedy I barely laughed and was bored several times, that’s a serious flaw. See Black Panther again, I hope to before it leaves theaters or just wait for something better.
