Initial Thoughts:
This is a movie that was filmed where I live, Newfoundland (NL). I try to see a lot of local movies, used to be in theaters but since the disaster called Stoner FM (you don’t need to watch it, seriously it’s the only movie I ever walked out of!) I don’t see them in theaters much (if at all) anymore. So when this one showed up on Fiber I was sure to record it.
Main Points:
As with a lot of NL movie the movie deals with very disturbing/serious subject. Early on a young boy witnesses a group of teenagers beat someone nearly to death and cripple him. He never tells anyone he saw this and the memory bothers him all throughout his life. The fact that the young boy, Orson, is dealing with his parents divorce and being a closeted homosexual also added to his very stressful life.
Ok I won’t get anymore into the plot. I thought the acting was good throughout, of course I loved the scenery (and I thought it made NL look really good), fitting music (just not my type), a good story and some surprising twists. Always nice to see Mary Walsh and Marthe Bernard (who continues to get better every time I see her in a film). I thought the camerwork was also good and the talking hamster, Buffy, was also cute and funny.
Final Thoughts:
This movie has some very disturbing stuff in it (rape, drug use, violence and blood) and is oddly not rated. I would say certainly ages 19+, please don’t let any young kids watch this. Overall though I enjoyed and I am not sure why it only gets 7 out of 10. I would have liked more lose ends tied up and for there have been a consequence to the rape (i.e. the guy going to jail) but I still enjoyed it and give it a solid 7.5 out of 10. I would recommend it, just be mindful of the events in it (I know some people are very bothered by watching rape scenes).
