Initial Thoughts:
I’m a fan of Edgar Wright, I’ve seen most (if not all) of his movies. So of course I was happy to see a new one from him, it was getting good reviews and my wife wanted to go, so a few days ago we went.
Main Points:
As usual not getting into plot. This movie has a really great soundtrack, I know that’s a strange way to start a review but it’s true. The music is on all the time because the main character is always listening to drown out his tinnitus (one of the few plot points I’ll talk about). While that’s a good thing, I did find his constant dancing, spinning, tapping his fingers and other musical acting out habits to get annoying as the film went on.
The characters are (mostly) likable and Angel Elgort does a good job as Baby. Kevin Spacey shines as always, he’s best at playing villains. I also thought Berthal, Hamm and Foxx also put in good performances. The car chases and action scenes in this movie are over the top and frankly wonderful. Sure there are some nice heartfelt moments and some good shoot ’em up scenes but the chases stand out the most.
It’s a different movie. I talked with two friends when I left the movie, one loved it, the other hated it. It is certainly a departure for Edgar Wright from his usual fare. This doesn’t reach the heights of Hot Fuzz or Shaun of the Dead but it’s certainly better than At World’s End and worth checking out.
Final Thoughts:
While I found the ending predictable that doesn’t mean I didn’t like it. I liked Baby (as I said before at least more than half the time) and as he’s the main character, that’s usually what counts for a movie. Please don’t bring children to this, lots of violence and coarse language, ages 17+. As with a lot of movies I found it a little long, a good 15-20 minutes could have been shaved off. So I give it 7.5 out of 10 and recommend it to anyone who loves good (and not just Top 40) music and great car chases. Hell just cars in particular, they show some really great classic ones. Until next time (Which will probably be the new Spider-man).
