Initial Thoughts:
Normally with a comic-book movie I’ve read the comic first, such was not the case here. Charlize has always been an actor I’ve liked (and James McAvoy has really gotten good the past few years) and the movie sounded like a lot of fun. So we saw it opening weekend on a matinee (we just made it in time, our theater gets packed because we only have 2).
Main Points:
First off, the music is excellent here. Similar to Baby Driver it has some killer songs, in this case all from 1989 and most (perhaps all the ones they play during the movie) are either German or about the falling of the Berlin Wall. Second, the action scenes are top notch! I really loved how they show the affect of a fight. Charlize’s character is beaten to a pulp and exhausted all the time, she wins but something just by the skin of her teeth.
The acting was good throughout and there were some nice funny parts, along with a couple of twists that I didn’t see coming. I loved the ending and they finally played one of my favorite songs (“Under Pressure” by Queen & David Bowie). It makes me want to read the comic and I certainly hope there is a sequel. The only downside is the plot, it’s been done before (a list of spies which everyone wants, just like Mission Impossible) and it has a couple of false endings that could have been tidied up/taken out.
Final Thoughts:
A solid 7.5 out of 10 for me.  Great action, fun scenes, good acting and an ok story. Charlize is having fun and I did too. While John Goodman has a small role here, I also felt he did a good job. Please though, don’t bring kids, violence, language, nudity and sex (as a straight guy I’ve got to say, some hot girl on girl action here!) ages 18+. So a solid recommendation from me, don’t expect a work of ark, it’s summer popcorn flick with a load of action and good fun, despite the fact that it’s dark and gloomy all the time in this movie, I’ve never been to Germany but I’m sure they get sunny days there too. Anyway, until next time, which will finally be a book review! Have a good one.
